Frequent Questions

How long is the trip?
The mission team will meet in Pensacola, Florida, on Wednesday, July 21 and fly out for Montego Bay the following day. The team will return on Sunday, the 1st of August. Delta will likely be the airline the team will fly on. Flight times will be available on a later date. The actual time away from the States will be eleven days (July 22 - August 1).

What kind of manual labor will we be doing?
The work teams are organized to support the needs and vision of the community and designed to connect team members with the locals.

Your team will be involved in one of three primary work projects: the construction of a bus stop depot to provide shelter for travelers during the rainy season, the construction of a central market to encourage trade and general commerce and the construction and remodel of a building that will house the future Library, Computer School and Internet Center.

In addition, small teams of 4-6 people along with a leader and local Jamaican will visit the homes of those in need which include widows, elderly couples and those who are sick or unable to work and provide for themselves adequately. The teams will be going to share their lives, possibly take on a small work project or help clean the house. But most importantly, the team will have the chance to talk, share and pray. Initially it may seem a bit scary to some, but the way it's organized and handled is safe and probably the experience that holds the most emotion and impact.

Will there be times of Relaxation and Fun?
The entire trip will be enjoyable but there have been specific times set aside for relaxation. One of the days the team is in Catadupa we will all travel to one of the beautiful Jamaican beaches on the Caribbean. A new tradition has also started with Experience Mission groups. It's the annual hot pepper eating contest that involves the locals and any daring team members. There will also be the annual hamburger eating contest.

The last day of the trip we will be in the gorgeous city of Montego Bay staying at the "Breezes Resort." The morning and afternoon of the 30th will be spent touring, shopping, and resting before we have one final service of worship and reflection that evening.

What language do the people of Jamaica speak?
The primary language will be English although many Jamaicans speak a local dialect of English that incorporates African, Spanish, and French elements.

What will we be eating while there?
A wonderful team of local Jamaican ladies will be cooking meals during the time in Catadupa. We will eat banquet style with a mix of foods that are familiar to Americans with a few Jamaican dishes that you're sure to love. Team members should plan to bring a "mess kit" along with a big appetite. There will be plenty to eat.

Experience Mission and Extreme Grace will do everything to protect the heath of all team members. The Experience Mission Heath and Emergency Plan responds according to the severity of the emergency of health risk

We will bring a complete medical kit that includes most medication for general accidents and ailments. We will distribute medication for general accidents and ailments among team members.

If there is an accident that requires a doctor, but is not life threatening or has the potential to cause permanent damage, Experience Mission staff and Extreme Grace will contact parents or guardians (providing the injured is a minor) and provide safe but quick transportation to a local clinic.
